February is officially Black History Month across Canada and was recognized in Victoria, BC last night to celebrate our diverse black community which dates back to 1858. It was an evening to acknowledge the social, political, religious, intellectual and economic contributions that individuals have brought to our communities to celebrate our diversity and raise awareness for an inclusive Canada.
Mbira Spirit was honoured to perform at this event hosted by Nketsap Mboussi and the Victoria African & Carribbean Cultural Society. Lova Nyemb Bassong was our beautiful MC! Councillor Charlayne Thornton-Joe contributed on behalf of the Mayor of Victoria and shared that it was also 1858 when the Chinese community came to Victoria and how far we have come today with diversity and inclusion.
It was a pleasure to have Tom Jensen and Jamaican artist Steve Ali Austin join our set. Lovely to have our Zimbabwean Family, Patricia Mukahanana, Seb Samukahanana, and Juliet Mukahanana join us as they did last year when Tafadzwa Matamba recieved this honourable award.
Wonderful to see with Marielle Duranteau, Mohamed Duranteau and Wontanara Drum & Dance their beautiful son Sekouba. Also friends from our Cowichan Valley, Marc-Debora De Vries, Daniel de Vries and their beautiful family.
